Substance Abuse Specialist

Job Summary:
Offers outreach, assistance and support to Emergency Shelter guests and Support Center participants around substance abuse issues. Provide case management services to homeless adults and families with substance abuse addictions. Work collaboratively with Project WIN team members and PADS case management staff to improve access to housing and supportive services.
Duties:
Conduct agency intakes at the Emergency Shelter and Support Center and provide clients with an orientation to agency services and rules.
Provide outreach in order to engage participants who do not follow through with appointments.
Deliver case management services for Project WIN participants by:
- Conducting assessments and treatment plans on those interested in seeking substance abuse treatment services (i.e. detox, in patient treatment and residential services)
- Enrolling participates in Project WIN
- Establishing a broad based knowledge of community services and communicating appropriate referrals to clients
- Connecting participants to substance abuse treatment programs and residential facilities as determined by the participant’s willingness to accept treatment and with available services within the agency and the larger community
- Delivering services as determined by assessment, as reflected in treatment plan and as needed, including individual and group treatment, and case management.
- Providing follow-up services with participants who enter substance abuse detox, treatment and/or residential facilities.
- Providing ongoing life-skills development including problem solving and /coping skill development to aid in the participants their recovery process.
- Proactively consulting with Project WIN partner team members, including nurse case manager, mental health outreach workers, and therapists both orally and in writing concerning participants’ needs and changes in situation.
- Developing and updating treatment plans, progress notes and other documents related to Project WIN.
- Advocating for participants so that they obtain the services specified in their care plan.
Assure access to community support services for WIN participants by:
- Coordinating with other community agencies and organizations in order to refer and link participants to needed services.
- Coordinating care with other providers and participate with other program staff in the planning and implementation of the care plan.
- Encouraging participants to participate in various community services through verbal planning and actual practice of skills needed to effectively participate.
- Attending scheduled meetings with other WIN team members in order to facilitate communication and care planning
Identify potential candidates for other agency programs, such as Transitional Housing.
Minimum Educational Qualifications:
CADC or related field/equivalent experience. Bachelor’s degree in social work, psychology, or other human services field or related field or equivalent experience is required.
Qualifications:
Candidate must possess strong interpersonal skills and is able to function within and communicate as part of a treatment team. Must have a demonstrated understanding and practice with harm reduction models.

Second-Shift Staff
Part-Time Position

Job Summary:
The Second-Shift Staff works directly with homeless men, women and families in West Suburban PADS' Emergency Shelters. The position staffs the overnight shift (10:30 p.m. - 5 a.m.) in the shelters.
Duties:
- Ensure the safety and security of the shelter clients
- Monitor the shelter area and restrooms
- Register late-arriving guests
- Reheat dinners, or prepare sandwiches for late arrivals
- Manage situations that may arise overnight. Should a situation occur, complete necessary documentation (e.g. Incident Report)
- Prepare coffee before 5 a.m. breakfast shift arrives
- Wake up shelter guests who require an early wake-up call
- Complete a Shift Log, providng a brief summary about the shift
- Maintain client confidentiality
- Maintain appropriate boundaries with clients at all times
- Report any safety or client problems to the Shelter Manager
- Reinforce Emergency Shelter rules
- Attend training and in-services approved by Shelter Manager
- Enter hours on bi-weekly time sheet and submit to Shelter Manager in a timely manner
- Perform other duties as assigned
Qualifications:
High School Diploma or equivalent. Some social service and/or security experience preferred. Candidates must have strong problem-solving skills and the ability to respond appropriately in a crisis situation. Candidates should have a flexible schedule as the position requires some on-call availability. Candidates must be on time for shift to relieve volunteers of their shelter duties.
